Project 4 - Van Gogh Inspired Collages
Name: Brookelyn Beyers
Description: For this project, we first learned about Vincent Van Gogh. We discussed information about both his life and his art. This was very informative and interesting to learn about. For example, I learned that Vincent Van Gogh never received formal art education and he taught himself to draw! After learning more about Van Gogh we looked at several of his works and found similarities between them. I noticed that many of his works had an abstract background. These backgrounds often included swirls, lines, and the use of color. So for this project, we got to create a Van Gogh-inspired landscape collage. I decided to make a winter forest scene and incorporate the Van Gogh-like sky in the background. This background was created by tearing tissue paper into strips and adhering it to paper with an acrylic medium (ex: mod podge). Then once we allowed that to dry we cut out a landscape to adhere over top of this background. I cut out a hilly, tree-covered landscape complete with a log cabin. After adding that to my art piece I took a white oil pastel and a brown sharpie to add some additional detail. Attached below is an image of my Van Gogh Inspired Collage.
Extension Activity: An extension activity that could be correlated with this project relates to Language Arts. In addition to this art project, students could create a story associated with their landscape. For example, with my collage, I could write about a family who lives in a cozy cabin in the woods. This writing assignment could be done where each student writes about their own art or where students swap art projects and create a story for a peer's artwork!
