Project 3 - The Dot

Name: Brookelyn Beyers

Description: For this project, we first read the book The Dot. This was a very appealing book in which the storyline encouraged a young child to be an artist. The child in the story created art pieces that included dots so, this project entailed making our own dots. We were given the freedom to choose our own design, color, and coloring supplies. I chose to use watercolor and oil pastels to make my dot. I used all the colors of the rainbow in a sunshine-like gradient pattern. First, I used the oil pastels to draw the circle in the middle and then the dots coming out from the center. Next, I used my watercolors to mix the appropriate color and paint in my desired area. Attached below is an image of my dot creation.

Extension Activity: For a higher elementary class this art project could be incorporated into a math class. Have the students create dots of their own in a math class and have them calculate the diameter or radius length. This could also be done as a whole group. The teacher could measure each of the students' dots and find a variety of different lengths amongst the class. This would be a simple way to bring art into academic subjects.
